Every Tuesday at 7pm at Remedies Lounge is the Movember Poker Tourney - all proceeds go to Movember

Thursday, November 17 - Northwoods Pizza will be donating $5 from each pizza sold, eat in or take out from 11am-2pm and 5pm-close.

Wednesday, November 23 - Egan’s Pub will present a special open mic in support of Movember - a Mo’pen Mic!

Saturday, November 26 - Looney Tunes Movember Party at 9pm including Best Costume / Moustache Combo contest.

Wednesday, November 30 - Official Wrap-Up Movember Party at the Lido Theatre at 7pm. Includes live music, photo’s, shavers, prizes and more!

Marc Joseph will be donating $1 from every purchase made in the month of November.

Patch Java, and their new location Patch Java II in the North Peace Leisure Centre will donate 10% of the purchases from any person participating in Movember.

Movember come to Fort St. John

On Monday’s City Council, the month of November was proclaimed as “Movember” in the City of Fort St. John. This support from the City is a great addition to the community support already growing for Movember.

Throughout the month, you will see men starting to grow their moustache in hopes of raising cash for Prostate Cancer Canada. In 2010, Fort St. John rasied over $27,000 and in Canada, nearly 119,000 Canadian Mo Bros and Mo Sistas got on board, raising $22.3 million.

This year, Remedies Lounge in the Northwoods Inn is once again helping the cause. You can find a poker tourney happening each Tuesday in Movember where the proceeds will be donated to Movember.

As well, Northwoods Pizza will be will be donating $5 off of each small, medium, or large pizza eat-in or take-out only on Thursday, Movember 17th.

Marc Joseph (http://www.marcjosephonline.com/) will be donating $1 from every purchase to Movember in November and will also accept donations as well.

Trimtek has a Movember special: One free custom bumper sticker with any donation to http://ca.movember.com/mospace/1360310/ in Movember.

The Movember financial year closed on Apr 30th. The final fundraising total for Canada is $22M! That’s 22 MILLION DOLLARS as part of the global total of $77M. Wow… December 1st has arrived. This marks the official end to Movember and what a month it has been!

On Tuesday, November 30, Egan’s Pub played host to the Fort St. John Movember Party to celebrate the achievements of the participants here in Fort St. John. The band “The Suspicious” played to a full house that saw every type of moustache including some of the pink variety. The waitresses were in good humour as they all sported a pink moustache to show their support for the cause. The night was also a chance to thank some of the participants of Movember and of course, chose a Mr. Movember and a Miss Movember. The crowing of Mr. Movember was by people’s choice and congratulations goes out to Matthew Bapty for taking the coveted title. Miss Movember went out to one of the staff at Egan’s who worked hard that night to ensure people got their drinks and foods and she sported her moustache all night long and that was Ashley Eckland.

The Mo Bro who raised the most money here in Fort St. John was Neil Evans of the FSJ Murses team. Neil had raised over $4,000 personally for the Movember Campaign and he was rewarded last night with a Schick Razor and a $50 gift certificate from Urban Vibe.

This community surprises me every time an event like this happens. The community goes above and beyond any expectations and it showed. As of 12 am, December 1st, Fort St. John had 126 participants that raised $22,182 for Movember and Prostate Cancer Canada. I applaud everyones efforts from the participants to the donors.

I would like to thank Devon and Patch Java for their support. For the last 15 days, every time a moustached man ordered an item from Patch Java, they donated 10% of the order to Movember. Devon presented me with the final cheque last night of $200. Thank you!

Next is Rememdies Lounge. Tammy and her business partner jumped on board right away with Movember and held different events at the lounge including a raffle for a Taylor Hall Jersey, a Burt Reynolds Shooter Night and their big fundraiser was where they donated $10 from each large pizza that was sold.

Dairy Queen in Fort St. John held a Movember day on November 30 where they donated a portion from every medium Blizzard treat that was sold that day. It was a great way to enjoy a cold treat for a great cause.

I would also like to thank a few others for helping me out with prizes for the Fort St. John Movember Party. Thank you to Fines Organics for providing a loose tea set. Thank you to Scoop Clothing for giving us a $50 gift certificate. Thanks Urban Vibefor the $50 gift certificate from your store. Thanks Original Basket Boutique for providing a basket full of goodies. Thank you to Uptown Grill for the $50 gift certificate. Thank you to Patch Java for providing a $15 and a $10 certificate. Thank you to the City of Fort St. John and the Visitor Centre for providing a BBQ Tool Set and finally thank you to Motion Media for the donation of printing of 500 business cards. The support of all these businesses and people was a great help and I hope you will support great businesses like these that support some of the great cuases here in Fort St. John

Who knew that on October 12, 2010 the City of Fort St. John would make history as they proclaimed the month of November as Movember in the Energetic City. This proclamation made national attention as it was featured on the Movember website and talked about all across Canada. Because of the national attention this story received, Peter Verge of Vancouver was inspired to do the same in Vancouver. After working with Councilor Kerry Jang, the City of Vancouver officially proclaimed the month of November as Movember on November 2, 2010. This was a great example on how an idea can be shared and used in other communities.

Well I must say its been quite the month. As I sit here writing this with a clean shaven face, I think that this community is amazing! Watch for pictures soon as we wait for the crew at Northern Groove to go through the many photo’s that were taken and they will have them up on their site.

Its been quite the trip and I may be sad to see it over, but I do know that we have made a difference in men’s health!

Movember grows to within a whisker of conclusion

Movember is coming to a close. The ‘Mo’, slang for moustache, and November come together to create Movember and each Movember, men are challenged to change their appearance and the face of mens’ health. Much like the commitment to run or walk for charity, our participants’ commitment is to grow a moustache for 30-days with funds being raised to benefit Prostate Cancer Canada.
Currently, there are over 178 participants who have raised over $14,200 so far in our region alone.
We spoke with Neil Evans this week about why he is doing Movember and how a few nurses at the Fort St. John Hospital are changing their face for the cause.
“After finding out about Movember, myself, Shawn Emmett and Paul Smith realized this was a great opportunity to promote men’s health while having a little fun growing our ‘stanches. As we are all male health professionals working on the front lines of health care, it also feels as if it’s our duty to take part in a cause such as this. We are very excited to help.” Evans said.
They have been going door to door asking for donations and will have a table set up at PriceSmart foods on Sunday, Nov. 28 where you can donate. If you are looking for a cold treat, Evans said that on November 30, the local Dairy Queen will be donating $1 from each medium Blizzard treat they sell that day to their team.
“We teamed up with Remedies Lounge as well.” Evans said. “They had a night where each ‘Burt Reynolds’ shot they sold, $0.50 was donated to our team.”
Currently in Canada there are over 115,340 participants that have raised $12.5 million dollars for Movember. There are businesses out there participating such as Patch Java will donate 10% of your purchase to Movember. When you come in and show off your moustache, Devon will take 10% of your total purchase and donate it to the Movember Campaign. You can also find an Edmonton Oilers Taylor Hall jersey being raffled off for Movember down at Remedies Lounge in the Northwoods Inn with tickets being 1 for $2 or 3 for $5. If you want to make a general donation to Movember, there are a few donation boxes set up around town. They can be found at Patch Java and Egan’s Pub.
To celebrate the end of Movember, Egan’s Pub in Fort St. John will play host to the Fort St. John Movember Party on Tuesday, Nov. 30 where throug out the night there will be prizes to be won, you can still make a donation that night as well and you can enjoy live music by “The Suspicious”. Also that night, someone will be crowned “Mr. Movember” which will be a people’s choice award so come down and show off your moustache and bring some friends so they can vote for you.

Its Movember 12 - How is your mo going ? It was great to see yesterday at the Fort St. John Remembrance Day ceremonies that there are quite a few guys here taking part in the campaign. I even saw this RCMP member who is taking part.

Huskies join Movember campaign

Though the playoffs are still months away, the Fort St. John Junior B Huskies are growing their facial hair now for Movember – a Canada-wide campaign to raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer by encouraging men to commit to growing a mustache for 30 days.

The campaign started on Nov. 1 with men challenged to grow a mustache from clean-shaven, but some of the Huskies will be growing beard too.

Huskies defenceman David Green brought the initiative to the team after being introduced to the campaign by his sister, Alana.

“[I] just thought it’d be good to raise awareness for prostate cancer because it is pretty common, just raise awareness for people that don’t know about it,” said Green.

The Huskies will have a booth set up on their Nov. 19 game to raise awareness and donations about prostate cancer.

Green said a lot of his teammates are already on their way to growing some pretty sweet ‘staches.

“They wanted to do it already, another version of it is No Shave November so they were kind of already a head start and just kind of introduced them to why we’re doing it.”

This is the fourth year for the Movember campaign in Canada. Companies in Fort St. John have been doing it privately, but this year Brent Hodson wanted to make it a community initiative. On Oct. 12, he went to city council to get November proclaimed as Movember.

He said there’s been a good local response to Movember with city council participating and various companies as well as different teams from the community.

Hodson said it’s great to have the Huskies involved with Movember.

“It’s a men’s hockey team and the whole point of the campaign is to raise awareness for men’s health and to raise money for prostate cancer research here in Canada,” he said.

“I think it’s great to get a whole team involved because it shows that people can come together for a great event.”

There is a local Movember party on Nov. 30 at Egan’s Pub where people will get to vote on the best mustache, in addition to getting prizes and listening to live music.

The funds raised through Movember Canada’s campaign will go directly towards Prostate Cancer Canada.

Fort St. John Huskies join Movember

The Fort St. John Huskies have come together to support the Movember campaign this year. The Junior B hockey team will be growing a mo and raising funds throughout November for Prostate Cancer.

David Green from the Huskies said that he talked to his teammates about Movember and they agreed to take part in this campaign. He also added that people don’t really know about prostate cancer, and a lot of people are affected by it so this is something to give back to, and raise awareness for it. Everyone on the team will be taking part of the challenge, but David was not sure about the coaching staff yet.

You can help the Huskies raise funds by donating at their next 2 hockey games on home ice. You can find the Huskies playing at the North Peace Arena on Sunday, November 7 at 2 p.m. and on Friday, November 19 at 8 p.m. Just look for a table set-up and you can donate there.
